Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) refer to chemicals that easily evaporate under room temperature. Many social conscious manufacturers have already chosen to produce products without VOCs. So just exactly what are these compounds and how can they affect our health?
VOCs exist everywhere and can [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] be divided into two categories. The naturally occurring VOCs refer to living organisms that [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] release chemicals. These include humans, animals, plants, and even fungi. They are released in the form of an [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] odor or scent. We have all smelled them before we knew what they were. There are also man-made VOCs. These include things like paint, adhesive removers, and cleaning products. They often release a scent that most of us recognize as less pleasant. Some chemicals are known carcinogens while others present unknown health risks. Often times it's difficult to study their effects at low concentrations as other factors may play into a person's health. However, we know for sure that many of these compounds cause indoor air pollution and are actually dangerous for our health. Their concentrations tend to be high [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] indoors as spaces are confined.
Mild health risks of VOCs include headaches, running nose, or nausea. More severe health consequences may include organ damage, central nervous system disruption, and even cancer. Many of the health problems are not [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] immediately evident and may take a long period of low grade exposure, so a lot of times when a person has a diagnosis, the damage is already done. Therefore, it's crucial to prevention such pollution. It's even more important for those more susceptible to chemical sensitivity, such as children, elderly, and pregnant women, to avoid known chemicals. Despite constant monitoring from regulatory agencies such as EPA, DOL and OSHA, these chemical compounds continue to surround our lives.
There are many ways to avoid VOC exposure. It takes knowledge and motivation to change one's surrounding to promote better health. Some safety measures include:
1) Choose safer paint or sealant labeled "low VOC" or use the water-based alternatives
2) Use green cleaning products. Better yet, mix your own cleaning [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] solutions. Baking soda and vinegar can go a long way in making a house clean.
3) Eliminate use of aerosol sprays or air [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] fresheners. Instead, use fresh lemon, flowers, and baking soda [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] to keep the house and office smelling fresh.
4) Stay away from cigarette/cigar smoking
5) Choose solid wood furniture. [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] Particle [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] board furniture contains chemical residue from manufacturing process. They can slowly release into the air in home or office for years after purchase.
6) Maintain and clean Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) system on a regular basis to remove common allergens, mold, and [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] chemical residues.
7) Inspect older homes carefully as many dangerous compounds were used in construction before their effects became known.
As the detrimental effects of VOCs surface over time, it's essential to take action against prolonged exposure. Simply changes around the house and office can make a huge impact on both human health and environment. It takes the initiative from a few socially conscious individuals to set a positive example for the rest of the world.
